Fair rules.
Fair treatment.
Let us farm.
A Voice for Tasmania’s farmers and LandownersAgriculture is a vital part of Tasmania’s economy and communities.
FLAG was formed by farmers and landowners who believe good regulation is necessary, but it must also be practical, fair and accountable.
This is about fairness.
This is about a practical balance.
This is about our future.
We stand together, this is critical to our future!
Tasmanian farmers are telling us regulation has become too complicated, decisions affecting private land are being made without any understanding of farming and dealing with government agencies has become intimidating, costly and frustrating.
FLAG began after farmers started comparing their experiences and realised many of the problems were not isolated.
We believe Tasmania can protect important environmental values and have a productive agricultural industry. The two should not be treated as mutually exclusive but we must be treated fairly by Government Departments and Authorities.
who we areWe are farmers, landowners, business people and community members of all ages, from every corner of Tasmania.
Many of us have managed land for generations.
Farming is a constant balance between production, animal welfare, the environment, worker safety, fire risk, biosecurity risks, changing seasons, rising costs, regulation, investment and keeping the farm viable for the future.
It’s what we have to do every day.
our principlesWhat We Believe
We believe Tasmania can protect its natural environment while respecting the people who own and manage private land. We support:
Respect for private property rights
We buy our land, maintain it and invest in it. We carry the cost, the risk and the responsibility that comes with owning it. This needs to be recognised and respected.
01
Practical, evidence-based rules
Policy should be based on sound evidence and practical experience. Rules should be clear and fairly applied.
02
Fair and respectful investigations
Suspected breaches should be investigated consistently, proportionately, and respectfully with proper procedural fairness. Regulators must be as accountable for their actions as the people they regulate.
03
Fair share of the burden
Landowners should not carry an unfair share of the cost of protecting environmental values for the wider community.
04
Strong future for Tasmanian agriculture
Regulation should support productive, viable farms and give the next generation confidence to keep investing in agriculture.
05
Good policy should protect what matters without making productive land unnecessarily difficult, costly or burdensome to manage.
have your sayYour land. Your experience. Your voice.
Policies and regulations are ultimately experienced by people.
If forest-practice rules or land-management decisions have affected your property, business or plans for the future, we want to hear what happened. By sharing these experiences, FLAG can build a clearer picture of how the current system is working in practice and advocate for sensible, constructive reform. You do not need to be an expert in policy. Tell us what happened on your land, how it affected you and what you believe needs to change.

Tasmania does not have to choose between responsible environmental management and productive private land. We can have both. But achieving that requires policy that recognises the knowledge of landowners, respects property rights and considers the economic and practical consequences of regulation. FLAG is working to ensure those directly affected have a meaningful voice in that conversation. Because decisions about private land should not be made without listening to the people who own and manage it.
